About DataSpecs

What are Metadata? Metadata describe an organization’s data. Having control over your official statistics, when they are collected, where they are stored, and when they are reported is essential to ensuring that everyone’s facts agree in reports, speeches, and interviews.

For those submitting data, collecting data, processing data, analyzing data, and reporting data/statistics, we all must know the calendar dates for key actions, whom to contact for definitive answers, where the authoritative data can be accessed, and when and where the statistics are reported. Those are the metadata that DataSpecs manages for your organization.

What Benefits Does DataSpecs Provide? From the first screen that displays updates on collections, applications/repositories, and Publications/Outputs, you will know the status of key metadata components. Intuitive navigation will guide you to the screens for viewing or editing the details about each collection, application/repository, and Publication/Output. The contacts and offices responsible for each are easily associated with them.

Those are the metadata that DataSpecs manages for your organization.

The reporting burden and redundancy associated with an organization’s data must be managed closely. DataSpecs does this by recording the effort (i.e., burden) associated with collections. You can also analyze redundancy across collections and applications/repositories by running reports on where the same tags appear multiple times.

The true benefit of DataSpecs to your organization is in its reports. The preloaded reports were designed from studying best practices over three decades of experience. Match your question with the corresponding report, and DataSpecs will present insights into your organization’s metadata.

Data governance is essential to being in control of your organization’s information resources. DataSpecs is the tool that will provide your data governance groups the metadata they require to make their decisions.

How do I Register to Use or Buy DataSpecs? DataSpecs is an on-line application hosted by ESP Solutions Group, Inc. Just go to www.DataSpecsCentral.com and register.

  • One account per organization can be registered using your website URL.
  • A 90-day free trial is provided.
    • During that time, one of the payment options provided may be chosen.
  • All the metadata you enter during your trial period will be available to you when you convert to a paid account.

A fully populated demo site may be set up for you on request.

Dublin Core Metadata Element Set

The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) consists of 15 metadata elements from the Dublin Core metadata terms, which can be used to describe a full range of web resources (video, images, web pages, etc.), and physical resources such as books and objects like artworks. These metadata elements are endorsed in the following standards documents:

  • IETF RFC 5013
  • ISO Standard 15836-2009
  • NISO Standard Z39.85

Dublin Core Metadata can be used for describing resources, combining metadata definitions across different metadata standards, providing interoperability for metadata standards in the linked data cloud, and semantic web implementations.

ESP’s content experts ensured that this international standard was mapped to the metadata fields incorporated into DataSpecs Basic. This will facilitate additional mapping and interoperability such as transitioning to the DataSpecs Pro Edition or a DataSpecs V6.X.
